George Hotz’s opinion on AI coding

I'm sure you've heard about the AI arms race in hiring. Automated resume spammers talking to automated screening systems and everyone having their time wasted. For a while, we had a bounty program that worked, but because of AI it's no longer providing good signal for hiring. Now, it's people who barely even understand what the bounty is asking for pasting it into Claude Code and submitting a PR. The bounties used to provide signal, now they don't. So that chapter is kind of over.

In place is just ... if you want to get hired here, start contributing to tinygrad. Our company is extremely public. We coordinate through Discord and GitHub and have one meeting a week that's open for anyone to listen to. There's an archive of all the past meetings for catching up.

The AI companies like to promote that anyone (who pays them) can be a software developer now. For some software, this is true. If all you need is a slop app for your slop brand, sure, Claude Code can one shot that and it's cheaper than ever to make. But that isn't software development, it looks a lot more like a slightly more flexible WordPress.

We encourage use of AI in software development workflows in the same way we encourage other tooling, but there's nobody now that we would hire because AI exists who we wouldn't have hired before and vice versa. It's sad that it breaks things like the bounty program, but that just means we need to find new ways of screening.

So yea, if you want a job here, just start doing it. Take your time, understand the goals of the project, and see where you can help. Generally we don't want features, we want deletion. We want things more clearly thought through. We want deep bug fixes and regression tests. Read the Discord and commit history and get a feel for it.

This job isn't for everyone. We are looking for people who want to build this. Because at the end of the day, it's not just for us, it's for them too. I (George) spent a lot of time thinking about how to best attack big tech rent seeking and tinygrad was the best idea I came up with. It's not a straightforward attack, that will fail it's too legible to them. I'm thinking on a 10 year time horizon. tinygrad hits at the base layer in the infrastructure. If the tech companies sell repackaged petaflops and we commoditize the petaflop, there's no place for them to rent seek.

Logistics wise, it's a super chill job. Remote / in-person hybrid, offices in San Diego and Hong Kong, feel free to work out of both or neither. Requirements are a one hour long meeting a week + a 3 sentence sprint summary every other week. Salary range is 75k-150k + 0.1%-0.5% equity for full time. Almost everything you do here is open source and public.

If you read this, you already know how to apply.
